When they finally reached Gokul, Vasudeva saw a frowning woman struggling to tend to a newborn girl. Drawing closer, he recognized her as the cousin of Rohini, Yashoda. The woman was trying to get her daughter to feed but stopped when she saw the man and his newborn.

“Vasudeva,” she shouted from her house, smiling when she saw Krishna. “What brings you here with this beautiful child?”

At that moment, Vasudeva knew what must be done. “Will you switch children with me and raise this one as your own?” he asked. “Will you allow him to call you mother and play with his cousin, Balarama?”

Overwhelmed with emotion, Yashoda nodded before crying. She had always wanted a boy and welcomed them inside her modest home. All ate butter to celebrate this auspicious occasion, and Vasudeva explained where he had been the last few years.

“I cannot send my daughter to her death,” Yashoda warned, already moving to take her girl back.

“Do not worry,” Krishna’s father said. “The gods will protect this one. They brought a sleep upon the entire kingdom this night so that we could escape, and they will not permit Kamsa to kill another child. The hour of judgment is finally at hand.” He continued, “tell Rohini what has occurred, and be ready when the time comes for this child to fulfill his destiny. He is a special boy, and you must treasure him.”

Taking Krishna in her arms, Yashoda began to feed him and Krishna took to her breast immediately. Then Vasudeva knew he had made the right decision and returned to his prison content.
